DANA training

Goal

The goal of DANA (Developmental Appreciative Navigation Approach) is to deploy medical specialists as much as possible in the areas of their unique qualities, and to set in motion a growth process that optimally supports their development goal. It can also be used to transform teams and medical departments.

Method

This approach was developed within the medical specialist setting by Annemiek Nooteboom, based in part on coaching and training techniques from Appreciative Inquiry and solution-focused coaching, both derived from Positive Psychology. These methods focus on systematically identifying and expanding the most effective elements of the individual and the organization, and on making the most of talent.

DANA is a structured and validated conversational methodology that can be used, among other things, for development interviews. These interviews are conducted by facilitators who have been trained as Professional Development Coaches in the DANA method.

Embedding & re-registration

Prior to the interview, medical specialists are invited — as part of their mandatory individual re-registration (Kaderbesluit 2016) — to collect 360-degree feedback on their individual performance and to discuss it with a trained Professional Development Coach. The coach is a fellow medical specialist from a different division. The 360-degree feedback uses the validated INCEPT system, part of the AMC’s Professional Performance Online (PPO) platform.

Result

The development interview aims to help the medical specialist bring out the best in themselves, among other things by making conscious and unconscious competencies visible. Development goals are formulated in a solution-focused way and linked to the specialist’s intrinsic motivation, so that they transfer to daily practice.

The outcome of the interview is a Navigation document, which the head of department then uses to draw up a Personal Development Plan during the annual review. Heads of department are also trained in the DANA method, so they can follow up on development goals in a positive and empowering way. The head of department can also use the detailed information to align the specialist’s tasks as closely as possible with their competencies and motivation.

Facilitators can be trained as Professional Development Coaches at Nooteboom Consult.
